TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE WORKSHOPS

Manual Camera Operation
A basic technical foundation in photography enables you to more easily focus on the task at hand in any of the workshop environments. It is required that you have a 35 mm camera that you can operate in Manual Mode, allowing you to control both the aperture and shutter speed settings simultaneously. It is also required that you have a working knowledge of your camera in it's manual mode, including the basics of light metering and an ability to apply aperture and shutter speed to create a technically correct exposure. If you have any difficulty at all with these concepts, please carefully review your camera manual to prepare for your workshop. Another useful source for information on these subjects is the National Geographic Photography Field Guide which will aid you in gaining an understanding of these essential technical basics.

Digital Photographers
If you choose to use your digital camera in a workshop, please make sure to note this during your application process. It is required that you know how to download images from your camera to a laptop, edit images using an image browser, back-up and organize your images for critique. Please understand that you will need to be technically self-sufficient and required to bring the following equipment with you: A laptop computer with CD/DVD BurnerÑPC or MacÑ2GB RAM preferred; the most current version of Photoshop with Bridge or Photoshop Elements installed on your laptopÑ30-day free trial versions are available from www.adobe.com; Digital memory cards with card reader; All manuals, installation disks and drivers, power adapters, cables, batteries and chargers for your laptop and digital camera; blank CD's and/or DVD's for burning images. It is strongly recommended that you bring an external hard-drive for the redundant backup of your images and that you have Data Rescue software for your memory cards.
